Let me remind you once again that F3 Hickory was born out of CSAUP. About 5 years ago a few #RedWoodOriginals were fortunate enough to be members of the F3 Columbia 9 team for the Palmetto Relay. And off we went to run, suffer, and ultimately celebrate running 200 miles together, as a team. We liked what we experienced so much that we came back from SC, stuck the shovel flag in the ground, and called it Whipping Stick. Since then we’ve expanded our region and continued to challenge each other to complete events like BRR’s, P200’s, Tuna Runs, SMR’s, MudRuns, and the like. 200 mile team based relays are the epitome of CSAUP. In 2017 and 2018 F3 Hickory sent teams of 12 to the Smoky Mountain Relay. It’s once again time to step it up, get our minds right, and HC for a return to the Smokies in 2019. Here are the details:

What: Smoky Mountain Relay (SMR) – 206 miles, 36 legs

When: April 25-27, 2019 (We’ll spend the night at Camp Tekoa, near Hendersonville NC, on April 25)

Where: Start (time TBD) at The Pink Beds, Pisgah Forest – Finish at Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, NC.

Cost: Before 12/31/2018 – $100/runner (Goal is to pay and register our team(s) by Thanksgiving)

The course will take us through some of the most beautiful, pristine, and challenging terrain in the Southeast. Along the route runners will see the magnificent granite dome of Looking Glass and spectacular views from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Mountains to Sea trail. At night you will run far from city lights, but very close to the Appalachian and Bartram trails along the Little Tennessee and upper Nantahala Rivers. Along the course, you will run through many picturesque valleys framed by tree-covered mountains and meandering streams. You can read more about it here: http://smokymountainrelay.com/

This relay is limited to 100 teams. So here’s the deal…we are forming at least one 12 man team but YHC really believes that we could easily have 2 teams from our region (F3 Hickory, F3 Lenior, F3 Granite Falls, F3 Mountain View, F3 Taylorsville, F3 Conover, are you listening?). Right now YHC is just looking for HC’s. If you have never been part of an F3 relay team, then it’s time. If you think that you can’t do this, then it’s really time. If you’ve completed this event over the past two years then you know of the awesome adventures that await. So what are you waiting for? Don’t hesitate. HC today!

Contact me to HC and/or if you have any questions.
