There is a popularĀ Irish ChristianĀ folktale associated with the jack-o’-lantern,[119]Ā which inĀ folkloreĀ is said to represent a “soulĀ who has been denied entry into bothĀ heavenĀ andĀ hell“:[120]
On route home after a night’s drinking, Jack encounters theĀ DevilĀ and tricks him into climbing a tree. A quick-thinking Jack etches theĀ sign of the crossĀ into the bark, thus trapping the Devil. Jack strikes a bargain thatĀ SatanĀ can never claim his soul. After a life ofĀ sin,Ā drink, and mendacity, Jack is refused entry to heaven when he dies. Keeping his promise, the Devil refuses to let Jack into hell and throws a live coal straight from the fires of hell at him. It was a cold night, so Jack places the coal in a hollowed out turnip to stop it from going out, since which time Jack and his lantern have been roaming looking for a place to rest.[121]
In Ireland and Scotland, theĀ turnipĀ has traditionally been carved during Halloween,[122][123]Ā but immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which is both much softer and much largerĀ ā making it easier to carve than a turnip

Q:
What is the devil’s most successful trick? In other words, out of all the schemes he uses to try to lead us astray, which one works best? I’d like to know so I can be on guard.
A:
Iām thankful you want to be on guard against the devilās schemesābecause the devil is real, and he will do everything he can to deceive us and turn us away from God. The Bible urges us to be alert to the devilās schemes, āin order that Satan might not outwit usā (2 Corinthians 2:11).
The devil has many tricks up his sleeve (so to speak)ābut surely one of his most successful is to make us believe he doesnāt even exist. We may admit that evil is realābut then deny that behind it are demonic spiritual forces bent on our destruction and death. Or we may deny the devilās true nature by turning him into a harmless cartoon character with a red suit and pitchfork. But Jesus said, āHe was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in himā (John 8:44).
Someone has said that the devil doesnāt need to think up any new tricksābecause the old ones still work! Itās true; lust, pride, power, discouragement, doubt, money, escapism, pleasure, hate, anger, jealousy, selfishnessāthe ways he attacks us are almost endless. If one temptation doesnāt work, heāll try anotherāand heāll keep on trying.
But listen: The most important fact about Satan is that he is a defeated foe! By His death and resurrection, JesusĀ Christ conqueredĀ death and Hell and Satanāand someday His victory will be complete. In the meantime, make sure of your commitment to Christ, and turn to Him every day for the strength you need.
