As a washed up former college football player, today is always an exciting day for me. Though I knew I would never play in the NFL, the NFL Draft Day is always something I strive to watch, not just because I hope the Panthers draft wisely, but because I know just how much emotion the kids who are in the draft have. To me, there’s nothing like the passion, desire, and hard work that those kids have put in for the past 3 to 5 years of their lives.
So, with that in mind, I felt that today would be a good day to commemorate my football days and today’s NFL Draft by having a football inspired workout. Thanks to Jordache being in Orlando for the Exponential Conference and probably wearing skinny jeans on the beach, I had the opportunity to Q on this special day. When I told Jordache that I would fill in for him, I promised him that I would make it hard workout. I feel like I did a pretty good job at doing so, but you’ll have to check with the PAX who posted to see if that really holds true! There wasn’t much mumblechatter and PAX were pretty sweaty and tired at the end of it all, so I think I may have done a decent job!
Here’s how the am went:
The Warm-Up
- SSH – IC x15
- Butt Kicks – IC x15
- Alternating Toe Touches – IC x15
- Windmills – IC x15
Mosey to El Paso where last night YHC committed gluttony by overindulging in some quality Mexican food. In order to make atonement for the excessive amount of chips, salsa, and A.C.P that YHC ate, I made us all do 20 burpees to work that junk off. After all YHC is still trying to lose weight (25lbs to go for my first goal!) and I have a cruise that the M and I are going on in June, so it had to be done. Then the real stuff started!
The Thang
Before leaving El Paso, YHC had the PAX partner up with someone around the same weight. There was some talk that we were going to do some Partner Carries. They were right, but not at that moment.
Mosey from El Paso behind St. Luke’s, then make a quick pit stop by the blocks at Corinth. One person per team grabbed a block and then the whole group moseyed to the first corner of the horseshoe grassy area in from of Corinth’s sanctuary. Admittedly, YHC thought it was a perfect square, but I quickly found out that was not the case, but the workout worked out anyways.
At the first corner, the PAX got into their pairs.
- PAX 1 would run the perimeter of the horseshoe
- PAX 2 would do bench press with the block AMRAP
- When PAX 1 returned, the PAX would flap jack.
- Once PAX 2 returned then one PAX (decided among each pair) would run with the block to the next corner and then sprint back to his partner. While the one PAX was waiting on their partner to return, they held a plank position.
- Once the PAX were reunited and the block was at the next corner, the other PAX would then partner carry their teammate to the next corner.
At the second corner, the same structure of the workout continued.
- Squats w/blocks – AMRAP
Third Corner
- Shoulder Press w/blocks – AMRAP
Fourth Corner
- Power Clean and Press w/blocks – AMRAP
Then we lined up on the grass of that same square facing the other end. Much to YHC’s surprise, I had to introduce some PAX to an exercise that I know all too well from my days of football – the Up-Down. After a quick demo we began our next station:
- Up-Downs on YHC’s count
- On the word “crawl”, we bear crawled to the middle of the grassy area (which I estimate to be about 25yds or so)
- Then finish with a sprint to the other side.
- More Up-Downs
- Beard crawl back to the middle and then sprinted to the finish.
We did this twice and moved on to the next station.
Moseyed to the side parking lot of Corinth and did two rounds of suicide runs.
Mosey back to the blocks to put them away and then back to the AO.
With five minutes left, YHC decided to get in some last minute Mary.
- Peaches – WWII Sit-Ups
- Beaker – Box Cutters
- Retread – Low Plank with knee touches
- Freud – Dying Cockroaches
And that was a wrap…
WOD – Romans 12:9-13
Let love be genuine. This is something that a football coach shared a while back and it’s always stuck with me. It’s not always easy to love other people, especially when they frustrate you. But as Paul exhorts the Roman Christians, we are to strive to love our neighbors no matter what. The best example of how to do this is through Jesus’ example. Jesus’ death on the cross was the ultimate expression of genuine love. Death may never confront us in the form of crucifixion, but nevertheless, we are called to be willing to lay down our lives (in whatever way that may be) for our neighbor – despite what they believe, despite what they have done, and despite what we may think of them.
As always, it was a pleasure being with you all. I am grateful for the genuine love and friendship that you all have shared with me since I started coming to F3.
I am less without you,
Peaches
PS. Pray with me that Dave Gettleman will make wise choice in tonight’s draft. Go Panthers!
