THE THANG: opportunity is the third step of the LDP and without the opportunities to lead, you miss a critical step on the path to becoming a virtuous leader.
Spent a good bit of the morning talking about how organizations typically end up picking their leaders. Hint 👀- it’s rarely based on the individuals leadership experience and past leadership performance. It tends to be on technical merits or things related to specific competencies (not leadership related).
Groups tend to ignore leadership in their leaders because: 1. Beggars can’t be choosers 2. Leadership is rare and other factors are common. 3. It’s so rare we don’t even know what leadership looks like.
Looking at organizations – these lizard 🦎 orgs are full of leaders and also full of opportunity to lead. Dredd talks about the military as a lizard and the importance they do place on leadership principles over say “soldiering”. Basically anyone can soldier, but not everyone can be a leader of soldiers. The army promotes on leadership while most organizations tend to offer opportunities to “star players” that are good at what they do in a non leading role. Star player does not make a star coach solely based on competence.
Lastly – leadership is a muscle that can grow stronger and the only way to grow it is through opportunity and multiple opportunities – even when that might mean stretching ourselves and the possibility that you might fail. MARY: she’s still on a candy hangover from Halloween 🎃
